Ceramics - BA - My Stuff

Chelsea Cooney’s ceramic work explores the quiet complexity of domestic life through delicate, hand-built porcelain forms. Her practice is rooted in an interest in everyday objects; particularly those associated with femininity, repetition, and routine. She draws attention to the subtle power of these items, reimagining them as poetic structures that speak to both personal identity and shared cultural habits.

Each piece begins as a thin slab of porcelain, treated not as a vessel but as a drawing in three dimensions. Torn edges, visible joins, and fragile seams are preserved intentionally, giving the work a raw honesty and maintaining the immediacy of line. Rather than smoothing or perfecting, Cooney allows the material’s natural qualities to remain, reinforcing a sense of process and spontaneity.

Her ceramic elements are often small, minimal, and abstracted, yet when assembled, they form larger compositions. These arrangements suggest collections, toolkits, or sets; objects that require one another to fully function. In this way, her work becomes both sculptural and relational: each part relies on the others, echoing the quiet interdependence found in domestic spaces.

Through her ceramics, Cooney creates a visual language of form, fragility, and repetition; inviting the viewer to reconsider the overlooked objects that fill our homes and shape our lives.
