Artist Statement

​

Chelsea Cooney is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the poetics of the everyday through both photography and ceramics. Her work investigates themes of composition, domesticity, and femininity, often focusing on objects and spaces that are easily overlooked yet deeply embedded in our sense of identity and environment.

​

In her ceramic work, Cooney recreates familiar household items: utensils, ornaments, and personal effects. She transforms them into delicate, three-dimensional drawings. Working with thin slabs of porcelain, she deliberately leaves torn edges and visible seams, allowing the material to speak for itself. Each fragment maintains its individuality while contributing to a larger composition, echoing the way domestic objects accumulate meaning over time. These arrangements are quiet performances: each element needs the others to fully exist.

Her recent photography series turns outward to the city of Dubai, where she captures construction sites mid-process. Rather than focusing on completed architecture, Cooney documents scaffolding, debris, and temporary structures as visual metaphors for transformation. She reframes these raw, utilitarian environments as compositions in flux; part of the journey toward an unseen end. The work speaks to her ongoing interest in structure, repetition, and the beauty found in impermanence.

Across both mediums, Cooney’s practice is united by a sensitivity to material, form, and the rhythms of daily life. Whether through clay or the lens, her work celebrates the overlooked, the transitional, and the quietly personal.
