Ceramics - MA - Minimal
Project type
Ceramics
Chelsea Cooney’s ceramic practice explores the quiet complexity of domestic life, using delicate, hand-built porcelain forms to elevate everyday objects; particularly those tied to femininity, repetition, and routine. Her work reimagines these items as poetic structures, reflecting both personal identity and shared cultural habits.
Constructed from fine slabs of porcelain, Cooney treats each piece as a three-dimensional drawing. She embraces the raw qualities of the material; torn edges, visible seams, and spontaneous joins; preserving a sense of immediacy and process. These minimalist forms, when grouped together, become larger compositions that suggest sets, toolkits, or collections. Each element relies on the others, echoing the interdependence of domestic life.
While her earlier works remain largely monochrome, Cooney began experimenting with subtle shifts in colour during her MA, introducing clay body stains and bold outlines to enrich the emotional and visual texture of her installations.
Through this work, Cooney creates a visual language of fragility, form, and accumulation; inviting viewers to reconsider the overlooked objects that quietly shape our homes and routines.
